About Kilbirnie Auld Kirk

Kilbirnie Auld Kirk is situated where Dalry Road meets Kirkland Road in Kilbirnie, North Ayrshire. Once called the Barony Church, it served a Church of Scotland congregation established in 1978 when two local parishes joined. The Category A listed building is now closed for worship, with the congregation gathering instead at Kilbirnie New Parish Church on Glasgow Street.

A religious community occupied the site as early as the sixth century, while the oldest part of the present structure is its nave, completed in 1470. A bell tower of two stages followed around 1490, and separate aisles were built for the Cunninghame and Crawford families in 1597 and 1642. Alterations carried out from 1903 to 1905 provided a transept and replaced the entrance frontage. Interior highlights include several stained-glass windows, the richly worked Crawford Loft from about 1705 and a seventeenth-century sounding board over the pulpit. The Craufurd family monument depicts Captain Thomas Craufurd of Jordanhill alongside his wife, Janet Ker.
