The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham is a Church of England centre of Marian devotion in Walsingham, Norfolk. It honours the Virgin Mary under the title Our Lady of Walsingham and remains a destination for Anglican pilgrimage. The tradition of pilgrimage in the village is associated with a reported vision received by Lady Richeldis de Faverches in the eleventh century, although the account is legendary rather than historically confirmed.
Anglican devotion was renewed after Alfred Hope Patten became vicar in 1921. A statue modelled on the medieval priory seal was installed in St Mary’s parish church the following year. Growing pilgrim numbers led to the dedication of a new Holy House within a small church in 1931. This building was substantially enlarged in 1938 to create the present shrine church. It replaced the medieval focus of devotion, which had been suppressed during the Reformation in 1538, when its image was reportedly removed and burned.
