About Church of St Peter and St Paul

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is an active Church of England parish church in Norwich, Norfolk. Recognised as a building of exceptional historic interest, it holds Grade I listed status and belongs to a united benefice comprising five local churches.

Much of the present structure originated between about 1300 and 1340, although a place of worship was documented here by the time of the Domesday survey. Substantial work continued under the Herling family during the fifteenth century, when the east window, tower parapet and spire were added. Flint walls are complemented by dressed stone, while lead covers both the roof and the spire, which rests on eight external flying supports. Inside, notable survivals include an octagonal medieval font, carved screen panels, fifteenth-century misericords and monuments in the Lady Chapel. The steep hammerbeam nave roof is carried on corbels depicting twenty angels. An extensive restoration undertaken in 1871 repaired the roofs and spire, altered the chancel roof and introduced the present seating.
