About St Nicholas' Church, Buckenham
St Nicholas’ Church, Buckenham, is a redundant Anglican church near Norwich in Norfolk. Set amid farmland north of the River Yare, it is protected as a Grade I listed building and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
Dating mainly from the 13th century, the church was altered over time and restored in the early 1800s. Its fabric combines flint with conglomerate, brick and limestone detailing beneath tiled roofs. The unusual west tower is entirely octagonal, with a battlemented top and a Norman-style entrance decorated with zigzags. A brick-lined 17th-century dovecote survives within the tower. Inside are painted panel ceilings, 18th-century box pews and pulpit, a richly carved 15th-century font, early coffin slabs and a memorial from 1707. Following damage and neglect during the 1960s and 1970s, repairs were undertaken, and fragments of stained glass by Norwich craftsman S. C. Yarington were recovered and returned to the windows.
