About St Mary the Less, Norwich
St Mary the Less, Norwich is a redundant medieval church near the meeting of Queen Street and Tombland in Norwich, Norfolk. Dating from around 1250, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Now privately owned and enclosed by modern development, the church has appeared on the Heritage at Risk Register since 2008 because it is particularly susceptible to deterioration.
The church may have origins before the Norman Conquest, although its earliest known written record dates to 1155. It ceased serving its parish in 1542 and was later adapted for Norwich’s textile industry, first for inspecting cloth and subsequently as a market for cloth and worsted yarn. From 1637 it accommodated French and Walloon Protestant worshippers, with services conducted in French until 1832. It then passed to the Swedenborgians and later became a Catholic Apostolic church. After religious use ended in the twentieth century, the building served as a furniture store until 1985.
