About St Mary's Church, East Ruston
St Mary’s Church, East Ruston is a former Anglican place of worship in Norfolk, near Norwich. Set beside the B1159 north of Stalham, it is protected at Grade II* and maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. Although no longer used as a parish church, it hosts a carol service each December.
Originating in the 14th century, the church was substantially altered in the 15th, while its northern aisle was taken down in 1778. The chancel underwent restoration in 1887, followed by work on the tower in 1985 and 1986. Flint walls with dressed stone details form most of the building, though brick is used on the north side. Its layout includes a nave of five bays, southern aisle and chapel, porch, chancel and western tower. A particularly notable survival is the medieval chancel screen, decorated with painted saints and Evangelists, carved lions and delicate tracery. The 15th-century font features angels, symbolic carvings and unusual beasts around its base.
