About St John the Theologian's Church
St John the Theologian's Church stands at Ber Street and Finkelgate in Norwich, Norfolk. This Grade I listed former parish church is no longer used for regular worship. After being declared redundant in 1984, it served an Eastern Orthodox congregation from 1986 until 2009 and later reopened as a secular venue.
A church occupied the site before the Norman Conquest, while the present medieval building dates from around 1450. Constructed largely in flint, it comprises a nave, chancel, two transepts, a south porch and a 27-metre western tower. Fifteenth-century Perpendicular windows line the nave, and the two-storey north porch has shield friezes above its entrance. Inside are a vaulted porch, a medieval carved door, timber roofing and a font decorated with an East Anglian lion. Victorian changes introduced choir stalls, an organ, stained glass and a painted screen, while an ornate reredos was installed in 1914.
