About St John the Baptist's Church, Hellington
St John the Baptist's Church, Hellington, stands south of Hellington in the Norwich area of Norfolk. This former Anglican place of worship is a Grade I listed building and is now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust.
Built around 1150, the church retains substantial 12th-century work alongside additions from the 14th century. Flint and brick walls are finished with limestone details, while the straightforward layout includes a nave, chancel, south porch and circular west tower. Its richly ornamented Norman south entrance has a rounded arch, carved capitals and three sets of shafts. Later medieval features include the porch, bell openings, Decorated windows and a double-arched piscina. The chancel’s south window contains surviving pieces of medieval glass, while the five-light east window holds stained glass made in Norwich by J. and J. King during the mid-19th century. An octagonal font is ornamented with quatrefoil panels.
