About St Etheldreda's Church, Norwich
St Etheldreda's Church, Norwich, stands on King Street in Norwich, Norfolk. This Grade I listed former Anglican parish church ceased holding services in 1961 and was formally made redundant in 1973. Since 1981, the building has housed a not-for-profit cooperative providing workspace for artists.
The church originated in the twelfth century and honours Etheldreda, who established the religious community at Ely in the seventh century. It retains a circular Norman tower, crowned by an eight-sided bell stage reconstructed in 1723, and a fifteenth-century south porch. Outside, sections of chevron ornament survive from the Norman period, while the interior has an undivided nave. Edward Boardman directed extensive work beginning in 1883, installing a tiled covering in place of thatch, altering the windows, constructing buttresses and renewing areas of flint facing. Major repairs commenced in 1975, and later adaptations for the studios included a mezzanine, a skylight on the north side, a kitchen and lavatories.
