About St Augustine's Church, Norwich

St Augustine’s Church, Norwich is a Church of England building in the Gildencroft area of Norwich, Norfolk. Set beside St Augustine’s Street, it has a churchyard of about one acre. The Grade I listed church was declared redundant in 1975 and transferred to the Churches Conservation Trust in 2000. At that time, its congregation worshipped in the church hall, with the historic building retained for services on important holy days.

A church existed here by the 12th century, although no part of the Norman structure remains. The present building dates chiefly from an extensive reconstruction begun around 1401. Its tall nave and chancel are built of flint, with brick and stone details. After the earlier flint tower fell, a distinctive brick replacement was erected between 1682 and 1687. Inside are a 15th-century font, octagonal arcade piers and a marble memorial to architect Matthew Brettingham. R. M. Phipson restored and reordered the church during the 1880s.
