About Saint Stephen's

Saint Stephen’s is an active Anglican parish church on Rampant Horse Street, Norwich, close to the Chapelfield shopping centre. It has Grade I listed protection and is one of England’s relatively uncommon medieval churches named for Saint Stephen. The former burial ground has become a busy pedestrian passage since the neighbouring shopping centre opened.

Written evidence places a church on the site before 1116, when it hosted judicial gatherings serving Norfolk and Suffolk. Most of the present structure is medieval: its side aisles and northern entrance date from about 1350, while the chancel and nave were completed during the sixteenth century. The northern porch was extended upwards to create the tower in 1601. Notable interior details include a hammerbeam timber roof, four medieval misericords and a Tudor font with a later cover. Its eastern window incorporates glass from several eras, including five figures produced in 1511 and transferred from Germany’s Mariawald monastery. Other fragments were pieced together after windows were broken in the 1648 Great Blow disturbance.
