About Saint James the Less, Pockthorpe
Saint James the Less, Pockthorpe is a redundant medieval church in Norwich, Norfolk. The present structure dates from about 1450 and has Grade I listed protection. Worship ended in 1972, and custody passed to a local historic churches trust the following year. After a period as accommodation for homeless people, it became Norwich Puppet Theatre in 1980.
The site’s earliest documented church existed by 1180, while excavated claywork beneath the current foundations may belong to an 11th- or 12th-century predecessor. Built in the Perpendicular Gothic manner, the surviving church combines flint, freestone and brick, and underwent restoration in 1885. Its unusual tower stands inside the main structure, supported by piers, dividing off part of the western interior. Following closure, several historic fittings were moved to St Mary Magdalene, among them the medieval font, painted rood-screen panels from the 1400s and circular pieces of coloured glass.
