About Saint Giles on The Hill

Saint Giles on The Hill is a Church of England parish church on Upper St Giles Street in Norwich, Norfolk. Still serving as a parish church, it is recognised as a Grade I listed building and forms part of the city’s medieval heritage.

A church on the site was recorded in 1086. Work on the present building began after money was left for its construction in 1386. Its tower was nearing completion in 1424, and the church could accommodate funerals by 1430. Richard Phipson oversaw restoration work in 1866 and 1867. Rising to 120 feet, the tower is the highest belonging to a church in Norwich. Interior memorials commemorate Thomas Churchman, Sir Thomas Churchman and Philip Stannard, with works by Henry Cheere and Thomas Rawlins. The church also housed a Norman and Beard organ dating from 1896.
