About Remains Of St Benedict's Church
Remains Of St Benedict's Church stands in Norwich, Norfolk, and is protected as a Grade I listed building. Once an Anglican parish church dedicated to Saint Benedict, it was devastated during an air raid in January 1942. Its damaged walls were removed in the 1950s, leaving the circular tower as the sole surviving part.
The medieval church probably originated in the 11th century, initially comprising a nave with a curved eastern end. A square-ended Early English chancel was added later. Although the tower’s precise date is uncertain, it may have Norman origins; it was heightened and given an octagonal bell stage during the 14th century. Most of the remaining building was reconstructed in Perpendicular style in the 15th century, including a clerestoried nave and northern aisle. Restoration in 1860 brought a rebuilt east wall, a replacement east window, a slate roof and an organ by Ward. The original bell was subsequently installed in a new church in Lowestoft, while the medieval font was moved to St Mary’s Church in Erpingham.
