About Parish Church of Saint Michael

The Parish Church of Saint Michael is a Church of England place of worship in Norwich, Norfolk. Dating from the medieval period, it continues to serve as an active parish church and holds Grade I listed status.

Built during the 14th century with the support of John of Gaunt, the church incorporates flint, dressed flint and rubble. Parts of the interior may be older, with arcades attributed to the late 1200s. Its medieval tower is an uncommon survival, while an elaborate porch added in 1488 has two storeys. Extensive restoration in 1852 altered the interior, removing galleries and replacing box pews with seating for more than 700 people. The tower contains ten bells, including a protected tenor cast by Samuel Gilpin in 1700. The churchyard includes a memorial to landscape gardener Humphry Repton and an unusual iron mortsafe intended to protect a grave from body snatchers.
