Norwich Cathedral stands in The Close in Norwich, Norfolk. This Church of England cathedral serves as the principal church of the Diocese of Norwich and houses the bishop’s seat. Governed by the dean and chapter, it remains a place of daily worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Construction began in 1096 under Herbert de Losinga, the first Bishop of Norwich. Built chiefly in the Norman style, the church has a flint-and-mortar core faced with pale limestone from Caen. Following serious riot damage in 1272, it was repaired and reconsecrated six years later. Its cloisters date from work begun in 1297 and rank as England’s fourth largest. The stone spire, completed in the 1480s after earlier wooden versions were destroyed, rises to 96 metres and is the country’s second highest. Medieval carved roof bosses are among its most notable surviving features.
