About CityGates Church
CityGates Church is a Free Evangelical Christian congregation in Norwich, Norfolk. Formerly known as Surrey Chapel, it adopted its present name in November 2022. In the twenty-first century, the church has served the surrounding community through activities including debt advice and involvement in Norwich’s Christian football league.
The church was established in 1854 by the evangelical minister Robert Govett. Its congregation initially gathered in a public hall on Surrey Street, a building regarded as having little architectural distinction. Among those associated with the church were the British missionaries Margaret E. Barber and Elsie Tilney. During the Second World War, Tilney went to Vittel in occupied France, where she helped efforts to rescue Jewish people and other overseas nationals held captive by Nazi Germany.
