About Church of St Michael At Plea

The Church of St Michael At Plea stands on Redwell Street in Norwich, Norfolk. Formerly a Church of England parish church, it closed for worship in 1971 and is now redundant. The Grade I listed building later housed Christian bookshops and cafés, and currently operates as a piano bar called The Church.

A church was established here by 1126, while most of the surviving medieval structure was built between about 1430 and 1468. During the Reformation, glazing in 17 windows was renewed, replacing earlier imagery. Restoration work in 1887 removed the screen between nave and chancel, added windows to the transepts, replaced box pews with chairs and gilded the roof angels. An organ made that year by Norman and Beard was also acquired. Notable survivals include monuments commemorating the prosperous De Hem family and several groups of rare medieval painted panels depicting biblical scenes and saints.
