About Church of St Mary Coslany
The Church of St Mary Coslany stands on St Mary’s Plain, between Oak Street and Pitt Street in Norwich, Norfolk. This Grade I listed former parish church ceased regular use in the 1970s. After serving several commercial and community purposes, it became an auction house in 2024.
Although its precise origins are uncertain, parts of the building date from the eleventh century, and records place it under the influence of St Benet’s Abbey by the late twelfth century. The church was substantially reconstructed in 1477 and has a cross-shaped plan comprising an aisleless nave, chancel, transepts and south porch. Flint forms the main fabric, complemented by stone details and lead roofing. Its prominent circular western tower dates largely from the early twelfth century and may be Norwich’s oldest surviving example. A later Gothic bell stage was removed when the tower was reduced in height in 1906, revealing earlier paired openings with triangular heads.
