About Church of St Martin at Palace
The Church of St Martin at Palace occupies the plain bearing its name in Norwich, Norfolk. Once an Anglican parish church, it closed for worship in 1971. This Grade I listed building is now cared for by Norwich Historic Churches Trust, which uses it for administrative purposes.
Excavations suggest that the site underwent three building phases before the Norman arrival, while Domesday records show Archbishop Stigand held the church in 1066. Its patron is Martin of Tours, identified in a fourteenth-century will as a bishop. After sections of the nave and chancel fell in 1851, J H Hakewill oversaw repairs. A raised windowed upper level and a bell structure were introduced within the following two decades. The church acquired an 1863 organ by Corps and Son; Norman & Beard reconstructed it in 1887, and it received further work in 1957 before being relocated to Horsham St Faith by 1973.
