About Church of St Helen
The Church of St Helen is an active Anglican parish church in Norwich, Norfolk. Dating from the medieval period, it belongs to the Church of England and is protected as a Grade I listed building, recognising its exceptional historic and architectural importance.
In 1270, the church was granted to the Great Hospital, an institution established in 1249. The original structure was later demolished, and the surviving tower was constructed in 1375. Henry le Despenser rebuilt the chancel in 1383. Around 1480, Bishop James Goldwell oversaw further substantial work, including the reconstruction of the three-bay nave and aisles, together with the south transept. The church also houses an organ made by Mark Noble.
