About Church of St Helen

The Church of St Helen is a Church of England parish church in Norwich, Norfolk. Still serving the parish of Ranworth with Panxworth, it has medieval roots and is protected at Grade I. Its exceptional medieval artworks and historic liturgical manuscript are central to its significance.

The present building developed during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, with Decorated Gothic beginnings and a stronger Perpendicular character in its later work. Built from rubble with Clipsham stone details, it comprises a three-level west tower, nave, two porches and chancel. Restoration around the turn of the twentieth century saved the structure from collapse, while a 1963 fire destroyed the chancel’s thatched roof. Inside, the painted screen depicts the Apostles, saints and bishops. The church also holds the illuminated Ranworth Antiphoner, containing 285 vellum leaves and 19 miniatures.
