The Catholic Church of Saint Peter The Apostle is a Roman Catholic parish church at 17a Sussex Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. It continues to serve as a place of Catholic worship and holds Grade II* protection. The building is the sole work of architecture completed to Eric Gill’s design.
Catholic services in the locality began again in 1899, using a malt house in Church Lane. Money left by Ambrose Page contributed towards a permanent church, for which building work started in 1938 and was substantially complete in 1939. Gill developed the plans with local architect J. Edmund Farrell, and H. R. Middleton & Co. undertook the construction for £6,775. Built in brick on a cross-shaped footprint, the church radiates from an altar at its heart, reflecting Gill’s forward-looking ideas about congregational participation in the Eucharist. Elevated pointed arches help define the interior. Several later changes departed from his scheme, though some have since been removed. The church was consecrated in 1964.
