About St Mary's Church, Great Yarmouth
St Mary's Church, Great Yarmouth is an active Roman Catholic parish church on Regent Road, close to the heart of Great Yarmouth. It is overseen by the Diocese of East Anglia and is the town’s principal Catholic place of worship. The building has Grade II* protection and is included on the Heritage at Risk Register, where repairs are recorded as being in progress.
Its origins lie in a Jesuit mission founded locally in 1824. A house and warehouse initially accommodated worshippers, but increasing numbers prompted the purchase of a new site. Work on Joseph John Scoles’s design commenced in 1848, with the finished church opening in September 1850. The Jesuits departed in 1962, and Augustinian clergy later served between 1972 and 1995. Inside are Victorian stained-glass works produced by Hardman & Co. and Franz Mayer & Co., alongside a nineteenth-century organ with 1,032 pipes.
