About Great Yarmouth Minster

Great Yarmouth Minster is an active Church of England parish church in central Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Dedicated to St Nicholas, it received minster status in 2011 and hosts worship alongside civic occasions, concerts and exhibitions. The church is Grade II* listed and appears on the Heritage at Risk Register at its highest priority level, reflecting the urgent threat to its historic fabric.

Herbert de Losinga, Norwich’s first bishop, established the church in 1101, and its consecration followed in 1119. The cross-shaped Norman building has a tower at its centre, possibly incorporating early masonry, and extends for 236 feet. Medieval work included rebuilding the clerestoried nave, enlarging the aisles and constructing an elaborate western frontage. Bombing and fire caused extensive destruction during the Second World War. Stephen Dykes Bower directed the subsequent reconstruction, after which the church was consecrated again in 1961. Its present pipe organ came from St Mary The Boltons in London.
