About Church of St Catherine, Ludham

The Church of St Catherine, Ludham is a Church of England place of worship in Ludham, in the Great Yarmouth area of Norfolk. Dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Among its most significant features are two painted works dating from before the Reformation: a tympanum and a rood screen.

A church has occupied the site since at least the 11th century. The present west tower and chancel were built in the 14th century in the Decorated Gothic style, with work dating to around 1350. The nave, aisles and roof were rebuilt during the 15th century in Perpendicular Gothic form. St Catherine’s wheel appears on the hammerbeam roof, while the octagonal font includes evangelist symbols and an unusual female wild figure. The rood screen dates from 1493 and carries painted saints and historical figures. The tympanum shows the Crucifixion on one face and Elizabeth I’s royal arms on the other.
