About St. Mary's Fochabers
St. Mary's Fochabers is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Moray, served by clergy based in Buckie and belonging to the Diocese of Aberdeen. It continues to function as a parish church, offering Sunday Mass each week. Dating from 1826, the church has Category B listed protection and is recognised for its fine sanctuary fittings and decorative glass.
James Gillespie Graham provided the design, while Fochabers-born priest George Mathieson placed the foundation stone in 1825. The building opened the next year, continuing a local Catholic presence previously maintained through an older village chapel and the mission at St Ninian’s in Tynet. A new reredos, designed by Peter Paul Pugin, was added in 1885. Franz Mayer & Co. later produced a pair of windows commemorating the Clapperton family, one depicting an Easter subject and the other centred on Mary.
