About Mortlach Parish Church

Mortlach Parish Church stands near Dufftown in Moray and serves the local Church of Scotland parish. It remains a place of worship and is protected at Category A, together with its burial ground and the watch house within it.

Christian worship may have begun here around 566, when tradition records that St Moluag established a religious settlement. Mortlach later became a bishop’s seat before this was transferred to Aberdeen under David I. The present T-shaped church preserves parts of its thirteenth-century predecessor, alongside later medieval fabric and alterations completed over several centuries, most recently in 1931. Its harled walls have dressed-stone details, while the eastern gable contains three slender stained-glass windows. Historic features include sixteenth- and seventeenth-century memorial stones, a marble font, timber furnishings from the 1930s and a pipe organ in the western gallery. The burial ground also contains an early Pictish carved stone.
