About Bellie Parish Church, The Square, Fochabers
Bellie Parish Church, The Square, Fochabers, is an active Church of Scotland parish church in Moray, in the Buckie area. Worship has continued there since the building opened, and the church is listed at Category A for its architectural and historic importance.
Built from 1795 to 1798 for the fourth Duke of Gordon, the church was designed by Edinburgh architect John Baxter as a focal point of the planned village. Its neoclassical Georgian exterior is faced in carefully cut sandstone and features a four-column Roman Doric portico. Above it rises a spire with a square clock stage, an eight-sided belfry and a copper weather vane. Archibald Simpson altered the interior in 1835, while work in 1954 reinstated its earlier orientation. Further renovation in 2010 introduced movable seating and removed the organ. Three stained-glass windows by Shona McInnes, added in 1998, depict Christian themes including harvest, life and Pentecost.
