St. Stephen’s & St. Tathan’s stands on Chepstow Road in Caerwent, Monmouthshire, within the boundaries of the former Roman settlement. A Church in Wales place of worship, it continues to serve the parish of Caerwent and Dinham. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building and occupies a site associated with a long Christian presence.
The present structure dates back to the 13th century, with the chancel forming its earliest surviving section. A cross-head from before the Norman Conquest, found nearby in 1992, suggests an earlier church in the vicinity, while Christian worship may have occurred at Caerwent during Roman times. Limestone from both the surrounding area and Somerset was used in the building. G. E. Halliday directed restoration work in 1893–94 and again between 1910 and 1912. Roman objects preserved inside include an altar dedicated to Mars and dated to AD 152.
