About St Benedict
St Benedict is an Anglican parish church in Glastonbury, Somerset, serving within a united benefice that also includes St John’s, Glastonbury, and St Mary and All Saints, Meare. It forms part of the Diocese of Bath and Wells and has Grade I protection.
An eleventh-century chapel on this site was originally associated with Saint Benignus, before the dedication changed to Saint Benedict during the seventeenth century. The surviving Lias-stone structure is chiefly medieval, though its precise age is uncertain. Its plan comprises a four-bay nave, aisles on either side, a clerestory and chancel. A buttressed western tower of three levels was erected during the fifteenth century and contains six bells, of which five were made in 1776. Richard Beere, Abbot of Glastonbury, commissioned the porch and northern aisle. Later work included replacement glazing in the 1840s, Benjamin Ferrey’s southern chapel of 1862, Victorian repairs directed by J. D. Sedding, and extensive refurbishment in 2014. A medieval piscina dating from the thirteenth century remains inside.
