About St Mary
St Mary is a Roman Catholic church on Magdalene Street in Glastonbury, Somerset. Facing the Abbot’s Kitchen within Glastonbury Abbey, it is also home to the diocesan shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Glastonbury.
Completed in 1940 for £11,000, the church replaced a converted stable used for Catholic worship, which was demolished in 1938. Local donations supported the project, and Bath and Corsham stone were used in its construction. Sculptures on the façade show the Madonna and Child, with St Dunstan and Richard Whiting, Glastonbury’s final abbot. The church was consecrated in 1941, when saints’ relics were placed in its altar and reliquaries. Inside, a statue of Our Lady dating from 1955 stands behind the altar, flanked by tapestries depicting the Glastonbury Martyrs and several saints. Stained glass above portrays the Crucifixion, accompanied by Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary and St John.
