About St Paul's Church, Seacombe
St Paul’s Church, Seacombe is an active Church of England parish church in Wallasey, Merseyside. Set above the ferry terminal on a raised and prominent site, it forms part of the Diocese of Chester. The church has been protected at Grade II since 2009, reflecting both its architectural interest and its historic role as a landmark for vessels on the River Mersey.
The church was designed by Liverpool architect John Hay and constructed in 1846–47, with its spire finished in 1849. A south aisle followed in 1859, while the north aisle, Lady Chapel and western gallery were added in 1891. Built from sandstone beneath Welsh slate roofs, it has a tower and spire, pointed traceried windows and a seven-bay nave. Bombing damaged the eastern end during the Second World War, requiring reconstruction. The spire was later shortened for safety, then rebuilt to its original height in 2013–14. Interior features include angel-carved corbels, a stone pulpit, an early 20th-century sandstone font and an organ by Henry Willis & Sons.
