About St Nicholas' Church
St Nicholas' Church is an active Church of England parish church on Newport Avenue in Wallasey, Merseyside. Part of the Diocese of Chester, it stands close to Wallasey Golf Club and is also called the Harrison Memorial Church and the Golfers’ Church. The building has held Grade II listed status since 2005, recognising its architectural and historic interest.
Funded by the local Harrison family, the church was designed by Liverpool architect James Francis Doyle and constructed between 1910 and 1911. Built from Storeton sandstone beneath a roof of Yorkshire stone slabs, it has a cross-shaped plan and a tower over the central crossing. Rich stone and wood carvings appear throughout, while stained glass includes the Harrison Window and a window depicting golfers alongside Liverpool landmarks. Doyle also designed the elaborate oak reredos. Further features include two war memorial screens, a three-manual pipe organ dating from 1911 and a ring of eight bells.
