About Saint Hilary's Church

Saint Hilary's Church is an Anglican place of worship on Claremount Road in Wallasey, Merseyside. It remains in use as a parish church and belongs to the Diocese of Chester. Both the main building and the older tower standing apart from it have Grade II protection.

A place of worship may have occupied the site since the Saxon period, while surviving masonry indicates a Norman successor. Further rebuilding took place during the medieval era and again in 1757. Following a fire that destroyed that building in 1857, architects W. and J. Hay created the present church, completed in 1858–59. Constructed from stone and roofed with slate, it has a clerestoried nave, side aisles, transepts and a chancel. The detached tower incorporates 13th-century work and features diagonal supports, gargoyles and a crenellated parapet. Notable fittings include an ornate timber reredos, choir seating from 1897, six bells made in 1859, and an organ originally constructed by Henry Willis in 1861.
