About St Peter
St Peter is a redundant Church of England church at South Somercotes, near Louth in Lincolnshire. Dating from around 1200, it is protected as a Grade I listed building and maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. Its prominent spire is a distinctive feature of the level surrounding landscape.
The church was extended and modified during the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, with restorations completed in 1866 and 1896. Built from limestone, greenstone and ironstone, with later red-brick work, it has a nave and aisles, chancel, south porch, and western tower crowned by a recessed octagonal spire. Inside are five-bay arcades with carved heads, a medieval chancel arch and a 14th-century screen restored during the Victorian period. The 15th-century font bears carvings of the Instruments of the Passion and human faces. Other features include early 18th-century altar rails and a pink marble monument from 1906. Structural movement has required underpinning.
