About St. Mary's Church
St. Mary’s Church is a former Anglican parish church in the Louth area of Lincolnshire. Now redundant, it is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust and is protected as a Grade I listed building. The church shares a burial ground with the neighbouring parish church at Alvingham, an uncommon arrangement linked to the former priory nearby.
Originating in the 11th century, the church later served as the chapel of the Gilbertine Alvingham Priory. After the monasteries were dissolved, it became North Cockerington’s parish church. Changes were made during the late 1100s, around 1300 and throughout the 14th century, while the tower was built in the 19th century. Greenstone, ironstone and limestone rubble form much of the structure. Notable features include a 12th-century south arcade, an octagonal 13th-century font, 18th-century enclosed pews and fragments of a medieval knight’s effigy. Its three bells date from around 1499 and 1634, although they cannot now be rung.
