About St. John the Baptist's Church
St. John the Baptist's Church is a Grade I listed Church of England building in Yarburgh, about five miles north-east of Louth in Lincolnshire. Now redundant, it is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust.
Originating in the 14th century, the church was substantially rebuilt following a fire in 1405. James Fowler of Louth restored it in 1854–55, adding the south porch and vestry. Built from ironstone and chalk rubble with dressed limestone details, it comprises a clerestoried nave, north aisle, chancel and three-stage west tower. The richly carved western entrance features foliage, fruit, a pelican, biblical figures and heraldry. Inside are a 14th-century octagonal font and pillar piscina, a 15th-century north arcade and tower screen, and later Victorian fittings. Of its three bells, the earliest dates to about 1370, while the others were made around 1500 and in 1831.
