About St James's Church
St James's Church is the Church of England parish church for Louth, standing on Westgate. This active place of worship is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its spire ranks third in height in the United Kingdom and is the highest belonging to an Anglican parish church.
The present church is chiefly a fifteenth-century building, occupying a site previously used by churches from the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. Its nave and chancel were reconstructed in the 1430s, while the tower was begun around the middle of the century and reached its current height by 1499. The octagonal stone spire followed between 1501 and 1515, rising to about 88 metres, with a weathercock reaching roughly 89 metres. A medieval treadmill hoist survives within the tower. The church also displays fragments of a carved stone cross dating from about 950. Storm damage led to repeated repairs, followed by substantial nineteenth-century restoration, including a new south porch, oak seating, tiled floors and stained glass.
