About St Peter at Arches Church, Lincoln
St Peter at Arches Church stood in central Lincoln, Lincolnshire, near the meeting of High Street and Silver Street, beside the Guildhall and Stonebow. It served for many years as Lincoln’s civic church, but the building was demolished in 1932 and no longer occupies its original site.
An earlier church was replaced between about 1720 and 1724, probably to a design by Francis or William Smith of Warwick, with Abraham Hayward overseeing the work. Its design was influenced by St Alkmund’s in Whitchurch, and stone was brought from the quarries at Roche Abbey in Yorkshire. The chancel and apse contained Vincenzo Damini’s fresco depicting the Ascension. Some fabric was later reused in the construction of St Giles Church in Lincoln, completed in 1936, while two stone urns from St Peter’s tower were incorporated into Norwich Union House on the former church site.
