About St Mary-le-Wigford
St Mary-le-Wigford is a Church of England parish church on St Mary’s Street in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. Dating from the early 11th century, it remains a place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The church was extended during the 12th and 13th centuries. Its west tower incorporates a Roman grave marker reused as a dedication stone and inscribed in the Anglo-Saxon period. R. C. Clarke of Nottingham carried out restoration work in 1872, followed by the construction of the south aisle by Leach of Cambridge in 1877. Watkins and Son restored the tower in 1908, and further changes were made in 1975. Four 17th-century bells hang in the tower: two were made in 1616 and two smaller bells followed in 1636. John Taylor & Co rehung and retuned them in 1932. The church also houses an alabaster tomb dated 1618, possibly created by Maximilian Colt for Sir Thomas Grantham and moved from the demolished St Martin’s Church.
