About St Martin's Church

St Martin’s Church was an early place of worship in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, formerly situated near the upper end of High Street. Neither the historic building nor its later replacement survives. The original site retains a paved burial ground between Garmston Street and St Martin’s Lane, incorporating former memorial slabs.

Possibly associated with Lincoln’s rare silver pennies dedicated to St Martin before 918, the church may have had Anglo-Saxon origins. After severe damage in 1643, it remained ruined until reconstruction in Georgian form in 1739–40. William Hayward designed an additional aisle around 1812. Most of the building was removed in 1873, although its prominent tower remained until about 1930. A replacement by A. S. Beckett was erected at West Parade and Orchard Street in 1873, but was demolished in 1970. Surviving objects include a sixteenth-century communion cup at Lincoln Cathedral and the Grantham family monument, now in St Mary le Wigford.
