About St Benedict
St Benedict is a Church of England church in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, and is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Formerly used for civic worship in Lincoln, it later housed the diocesan Mothers’ Union until 2018. Since 2020, the building has served as a base for Lincoln Street Pastors, and a bookshop moved into the church in 2022.
Recorded by 1107, the church suffered extensive damage during the English Civil War and was subsequently restored only in part. Its surviving nave originally formed the chancel, while the northern chapel was added for Robert Tattershall in 1378. The reconstructed tower was designed to resemble Lincoln’s other towers from the late Anglo-Saxon period. Old Kate, a bell dating from 1585, was funded by the city’s barber-surgeons. After closure in 1931, proposed demolition prompted a public campaign that secured the building’s preservation and renovation. Furnishings include a panelled oak pulpit from the late 17th century, an 18th-century font and several memorials.
