About Saint John the Baptist
Saint John the Baptist is an Anglican parish church on Laughton Way, serving Lincoln’s Ermine Estate. Designed by Sam Scorer, it remains a Church of England place of worship and has held Grade II* protection since 1995.
The estate’s first Anglican premises opened in 1956 as a temporary church combined with a community centre. Work on the permanent building began in April 1962 and was largely complete that December, at a cost of £26,500. The Bishop of Lincoln consecrated it on 6 October 1963. Its six-sided plan is covered by an aluminium-clad concrete roof, shaped as a hyperbolic paraboloid and rising from ground level at its northern and southern points. Keith New designed the abstract stained glass across the east wall. Scorer also created the cast-concrete altar, font and pulpit; the altar stands within a circular sanctuary, while the font occupies the central aisle.
