About St John the Baptist, Buckminster

St John the Baptist, Buckminster is a Church of England place of worship in Buckminster, near Grantham in Leicestershire. Built around 1250, the church has Grade I listed status in recognition of its historic and architectural importance.

Its plan includes a central nave, chancel, aisles on both sides and a chapel founded for chantry worship, together with a spired tower. Bells cast between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries hang in the tower, which also contains an unusual chimney associated with a beacon. Lightning hit the spire in 1841; it was repaired in 1843 and restored again in 1894. A broader programme of restoration took place in 1883. Further details include access stairs formerly leading to the rood near the chancel entrance. Lionel Tollemache, the eighth Earl of Dysart, built a mausoleum for his family at the church, and this structure holds its own Grade II* designation.
