About Saint Hugh of Lincoln
Saint Hugh of Lincoln is a Roman Catholic parish church near Lincoln’s centre, at Monks Road and Friars Lane. It remains an active place of worship and holds Grade II listed status. Its parish extends to the Chapel of St Francis at Bardney.
A Catholic chapel had served Lincoln since 1799, although an 1870 scheme to replace it was abandoned. Mayor Francis Clarke later pledged financial support, and trustees of his estate contributed after his death. Albert Vicars drew up the design, and Edward Bagshawe, Nottingham’s bishop, laid the first stone on 17 November 1892. Completed at a cost of £7,300, the church received its formal opening from Cardinal Herbert Vaughan on 19 December 1893. Stations depicting Christ’s journey to Calvary arrived in 1897. A porch and several coloured-glass windows followed in 1909, some by Alexander Gascoyne, while the western window was fitted in 1921. Work undertaken from 2008 until 2010 renewed the interior, introducing a stone altar and decorative painting to the ceiling.
