About Lincoln Cathedral

Lincoln Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral at Minster Yard in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. It is the Bishop of Lincoln’s official church and the leading place of worship for the wider diocese. Responsibility for its administration rests with the dean and chapter. The building has Grade I listed protection.

Construction on the site began under Bishop Remigius in 1072, and the original cathedral was finished twenty years later. A blaze ruined the wooden roof in 1124, before an earthquake caused widespread destruction in 1185. St Hugh later oversaw an ambitious programme of reconstruction, with work on the choir and east transepts taking place from 1192 to 1210. The cathedral contains Gothic architecture from the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular periods, with rib vaulting, external flying supports and pointed arches. Its notable details include two medieval circular stained-glass windows, known as the Dean’s Eye and Bishop’s Eye, and Great Tom among the bells installed in its three towers.
