About Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul

The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul stands at Belton, close to Grantham in Lincolnshire. This Church of England place of worship continues to serve Belton parish, within the Diocese of Lincoln and Loveden deanery. It is protected at Grade I and has been linked with the Belton House estate since the 1600s.

Its origins lie around 1200, while the tower may survive from the preceding century. Additions were made in the 1300s and 1700s, before substantial alteration and repair during the nineteenth century. Jeffry Wyattville designed the Brownlow family’s burial chapel and mausoleum. Inside, memorials record nearly four centuries of the Brownlow and Cust families, with pieces by sculptors including Antonio Canova, William Theed the Younger and Carlo Marochetti. Sir Edwin Lutyens created Adelbert Cust’s chest tomb in the burial ground. In 2021, lottery support and local fundraising enabled work to restore all five bells.
