About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is an Anglican parish church in Grantham, Lincolnshire. Still serving its parish, it belongs to the Church of England and holds Grade II* protection for its architectural and historic importance.
Its earliest fabric is from the 1100s. Beside the nave are arcades of Norman origin and from around 1200, while the three-tiered tower and its spire were constructed about 1300. Other surviving elements include the Norman baptismal font, piscina and clerestory. The north chancel chapel was reroofed during the 1800s, and its eastern window contains medieval glazing from the 1400s, showing birds and heraldic designs. Restoration took place in 1858. The oak seating, pulpit, reading stand and altar screen were installed around 1860.
