About Church of St Mary and St Hardulph
The Church of St Mary and St Hardulph is an active Church of England parish church at Breedon on the Hill, near Derby in Leicestershire. Standing prominently on Breedon Hill within an Iron Age fortified site, it is protected at Grade I for its exceptional historic and architectural significance.
A Saxon religious community was established here around 675, followed by a small Augustinian priory in about 1120. The present church dates from around 1150 and incorporates the eastern section of the former priory, including its central tower; the nave and remaining monastic structures were subsequently removed. Inside is an important group of ninth-century stone reliefs depicting figures, animals, birds, vines and interlaced designs. The church also holds elaborate sixteenth- and seventeenth-century memorials to the Shirley family. Among them is Sir George Shirley’s alabaster monument, commissioned more than two decades before his death and featuring a full-size carved skeleton.
